        ChinesescientistshavesharedvitaldataandmadeinsightfuldiscoverieswithinternationalpeersontheoriginsofCOVID-19.

        OneexampleisarecentstudybyMangShifromSunYat-senUniversityinGuangdongprovinceandEdwardHolmesfromtheUniversityofSydney,Australia.Theyidentifiedabatvirus,BtSY2,thatiscloselyrelatedtoSARS-CoV,whichcausedaglobaloutbreakin2003,andSARS-CoV-2,theoriginalCOVID-19strain,suggestingahistoryofrecombinationeventsthathadtakenplace.

        Thestudy,publishedonthepreprintrepositorybioRxivinNovember,revealedanunexpectedlyhighfrequencyofco-infectionofvirusesinbats.

        Recombinationisamechanismofcoronavirusesthatallowsthemtoexchangegeneticmaterials,leadingtonewgeneticvariantsandtraits.Thisstudyaddstothemountingevidencethatthevirushadoriginatedfromnature.

        OnMarch1,ForeignMinistryspokeswomanMaosaidtheUSputtingitsintelligencecommunityinchargeofamatterofscienceisaclearsignthattheissuehasbeenpoliticized.ShesaidtheUSwillnotsucceedinmaligningChinabyrehashingits"lab-leaktheory".
