Whilefetaldeathsdecreasedby5percentforBlackmothersbetween2020and2021,theirratesremainedsignificantlyhigherthanwhitemothers,accordingtothestudypublishedbytheU.S.CentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC)onThursday.
ForBlackmothers,theratewas9.8per1,000livebirthsandfetaldeathsin2021,comparedtowhitemothers"rateof4.8,CDCdatashowed.
Thefirstyearofthepandemic,therateforBlackfetaldeathswas10.34andin2019theratewas10.41,allmorethandoubletheratewhiteandHispanicmothersexperienced.
Fetalmortalityratescountdeathsingestationorstillbirthsanddonotincludeabortionsormiscarriages.TheCDCdefinesamiscarriageasapregnancylossbefore20weeksofgestationalage.
